Salina is an island in the Aeolian Islands group to the north of Sicily, southern Italy. Salina’s serene simplicity is a welcome respite from the crowds found on the other islands. Stromboli is a small island off the north coast of Sicily, containing one of the three active volcanoes in Italy. It is one of the eight Aeolian Islands, a volcanic arc north of Sicily. This name is a corruption of the Ancient Greek name Strongulē which was given to it because of its round swelling form. The volcano has erupted many times, and is constantly active with minor eruptions, often visible from many points on the island and from the surrounding sea, giving rise to the island's nickname "Lighthouse of the Mediterranean" There are two villages on the island, the larger Stromboli and the much smaller Ginostra, a former fishing village rarely visited by tourists. It is not yet feasible to walk between the villages and the only way to travel between them is by boat.
