The Croatian city of Rovinj lies on the Adriatic Sea coast, on the western coast of the Istrian Peninsular. The city is a thriving fishing port and is also a popular tourist destination. The city's Old Town, which used to be an island secured by medieval walls, has seven gates, of which three still remain today. Artefacts have been found that date back to the Bronze Age although the city didn't really begin to grow until the 3rd century. The city is characterised by narrow houses, narrow streets and a small square which is a reflection of the limited space available in the city on which to build. Interesting attractions in the city's Old Town include the striking Church of St Euphemia and the Balbi Arch, which both have more than a hint of Venice about them.
Located near to the city centre, the port offers passenger ferry services to Venice in Italy with a crossing time of around 3 hours and 30 minutes when the crossing stops en route in Porec, Pula or Piran. Direct crossings to the Italian city take around 2 hours and 45 minutes. Facilities in the port include restaurants and some shops.

The city is one of Italy's most unique with is former grandeur still in evidence today with is grand buildings complete with neoclassical facades. Despite the grandeur on display, the city is frequently overlooked by visitors who choose instead to visit other Italian cities that have a more established tourist infrastructure such as Venice, which is around 160 km to the west of Trieste. The city is a great place to be based in order to explore this part of Italy's coast but the city itself has a number of tourist attractions, museums, ancient Roman remains and some lovely cafes and restaurants in which to relax. Many of the city's most popular attractions are located in the medieval quarter of the Old Town and one attraction that is hard to miss is the Basilica di San Silvestro as it sits on top of the Colle Capitolino hill. Also in the city is the impressive 14th century Trieste Cathedral which is found overlooking the Piazza della Cattedrale.
