Eckero Guide

The Finnish municipality of Eckero is located in Aland, an autonomous territory under Finnish sovereignty. Despite it being under Finnish sovereignty the municipality is unilingually Swedish and 90% of the population are Swedish speakers and is the westernmost municipality of Åland and Finland. The company Eckerö Linjen operates a ferry connection between Berghamn in Storby, Eckerö and Grisslehamn on Väddö, Norrtälje in Sweden. Eckerö's most famous building is the Post and Customs house which was the largest and most impressive building erected to aid postal services between Stockholm and St. Petersburg. The building was constructed in 1828.

Aland is an autonomous, demilitarised, monolingually Swedish-speaking region of Finland that consists of an archipelago lying at the entrance to the Gulf of Bothnia in the Baltic Sea. Collectively, the islands in the archipelago form the smallest region of Finland, constituting 0.49% of its land area and 0.50% of its population.

The Swedish town of Grisslehamn is the main town located on the long and narrow island of Vaddo. It is situated around 110 km to the north of Stockholm and for centuries has been the gateway to the Sea of Aland for centuries. Amenities in the town include a fish shop and cafes located around the harbour which both locals and visitors seem to enjoy. Another popular way of enjoying the town is to cycle around the town whilst taking in the sites. Bicycles can be hired from Grisslehamn's Marina and also at Vaddo Vital near Almsta where canoes can also be hired. The conference centre, Hotell Havsbaden, was built in 1903 and offers tranquil views over the sea and harbour.

The ferry from the town's port goes to Eckero and it is the shortest distance to Åland from the Swedish mainland with a crossing time of around 1 hour and 45 minutes.
