Ferries to Guernsey

Guernsey is an island in the English Channel, just off the coast of Normandy and along with Jersey, and a number of smaller islands including Alderney, Sark, Herm, Jethou and Lihou, Guernsey forms part of the Channel Islands.

With a total land area of thirty square miles, and a coastline of thirty miles, the landscape of Guernsey is dominated by its coastal features. Of its population of just sixty seven thousand, around a quarter live in St Peter Port, which is Guernsey’s capital, as well as its main port, providing a gateway to the island from France, neighboring Jersey and England.

The unique blend of French and English culture and the fact that both languages are spoken widely on the island make Guernsey a popular destination for visitors from the UK, France, and other parts of mainland Europe.

Getting to Guernsey by ferry is a relatively painless experience with a choice of departure ports from both sides of the channel as well as inter-channel-island services from Jersey. Condor Ferries operate year round crossings from Portsmouth, Jersey and St Malo with both conventional and fast ferries, as well as a seasonal service from Poole. Manche Iles Express operates passenger only services to Guernsey from the French ports of Diélette, Carteret and Granville at various times throughout the year with some services travelling via Jersey.

The island has an extensive bus route, which makes travelling around by public transport relatively straightforward. St Peter Port is well connected to the bus routes, meaning you can travel quickly and easily from your ferry to your final destination by bus. There are also a number of car hire options available at the ferry port and airport, for visitors who want the most flexible and self-contained transport option. The island does have some unusual traffic rules and a maximum speed limit of 35 mph across the entire island, which can take some visiting driver by surprise.

  • "easy to book"

I used Direct Ferries in my planning for our trip to Guernsey. As a single mum with two boys (one a teenager!!) the less hassle, the easier life is, especially when the logistics of 400+ car miles to get to the Ferry had to be negotiated first. I booked on line and was quickly confirmed and updated. Due to car issues, I had to change cars twice before our travel. Each update was quick and easy to do and was clearly processed when we checked in. On board the ship was clean and comfortable. The hoover staff used to clean up a passengers' dodgy tummy didn't help, as it seemed t share the odour round the whole area. The staff noticeably remained unflustered and cheery throughout. On or return we were sat near one of the exclusive seating lounges- controlled by an entry pad. Several customers forgot the code. My boys had remembered it from watching others and happily shared it with the customers. Some received this well, others seemed a bit annoyed. I guess if paying extra you'd expect that exclusivity. It added to my boys' pleasure, but perhaps an entry card or something more discreet would work better.? The food we chose was well presented and well cooked, with options for all. I did later decide Id like another green tea and tried to purchase the unlimited refill for an extra pound (as the ad. stated) I learned however that you cant do that after a purchase. That seems a bit unfair to me and a bit misleading - so beware - if you think you'd like it, buy it at the time....unless of course the Ferry change their policy. Both journeys went well, there was a longer delay on etruning to Poole(it seemed they took 4 lanes of traffic down to one check point).
