The town of Freeport is located on Grand Bahama, the most northerly of the islands of the Bahamas and is only around 70 miles to the east of Palm Beach in the US State of Florida. Grand Bahama is a regular destination for short cruises departing from Florida and is the fourth largest of the 700 islands of the Bahamas. It is popular with tourists because of its beaches of white sand that surrounds the island and because of its watersports that range from scuba diving and snorkelling to deep sea fishing.
Partly though design and partly as a result of damage caused by a hurricane to other parts of Freeport, Lucaya and its marketplace have become into the tourist centre of the island. There is a nice range of shops and restaurants at the International Bazaar which are themed from places around the world. However, although there remains something here to offer tourists, it has lost many shops to Port Lucaya Marketplace.
