Leaving Italy behind, the crossing to Malta lands you in Valletta, with the fortified bastions of the Grand Harbour rising ahead as the ferry approaches — one of the Mediterranean's more dramatic arrivals. Once docked, St John's Co-Cathedral's Baroque interior and the Upper Barrakka Gardens' harbour views are an easy walk from the terminal, while Mdina, Malta's silent former capital, and the ancient temples of Ħaġar Qim reward a half-day trip inland.
