Why Take the Quick Way Home

Flying between filming locations would be faster, but that would ruin the fun. The rest of the ensemble runs just as deep. Mia Goth, Jon Bernthal, John Leguizamo, Benny Safdie, Elliot Page, and Himesh Patel round out a supporting cast large enough to fill an actual Trojan army. Sharp-eyed Homer fans will point out that the Odyssey technically opens after the Iliad's warriors have already fallen, a technicality that hasn't stopped searches for Christopher Nolan's Odyssey Achilles from spiking every time a new trailer drops, with fans holding out hope for at least one flashback.

Sicily: Goat Island & the Realm of the Winds

Start your journey where much of the production itself started: the Egadi Islands, just off Sicily's western tip near Trapani. Favignana, the largest of the three islands, has long been known amongst the locals as Goat Island, and local tradition places it among Odysseus's own landings on the way home.

Nolan's crew took over much of the main town for months, filming along the coves near Cala Rossa while cast and crew hiked daily up to the Castle of Santa Caterina, the hilltop fortress that shows up repeatedly in production photography. The ferry from Favignana to Trapani takes around 30 minutes with Liberty Lines Fast Ferries, and is not only an easy first island to reach, but also an even easier one to fall in love with.

From there, the natural next crossing heads north to the Aeolian Islands, reached most easily by ferry or hydrofoil from Milazzo. This volcanic archipelago — Lipari, Vulcano, and the tiny islet of Basiluzzo among them — supplied several of the film's most otherworldly backdrops, its sulphurous craters and black-sand shores.

In Homer's epic, this is the neighborhood ruled by Aeolus, keeper of the winds, who gives Odysseus a bag holding every unfavorable gust in the world, a gift that goes about as well as you would expect once his crew gets curious. Sail here on a blustery afternoon, and you will understand exactly why that detail survived three thousand years of retelling.

Greece: Land of Nestor and the Sirens

The second leg crosses the Ionian Sea into Greece, where filming concentrated on Messenia, in the southwestern Peloponnese. This is an unhurried, deeply historic coastline, built for slow travel rather than checklists. If you stay near Pylos, you will be within easy reach of Voidokilia, a crescent of sand backed by dunes, and Nestor's Cave, the cliffside opening above the beach where the film's Cyclops scene was reportedly shot. A short drive away, Methoni Castle holds its own promontory, attached to the mainland by a narrow stone bridge, with the sea encompassing it on three sides.

Further north and inland, the fortress of Acrocorinth crowns a rocky outcrop above the isthmus, its walls predating Homer himself by centuries. Together, these sites map almost exactly onto the story's Peloponnese chapters: Cape Malea's storms, the wanderings that follow, and the kingdom of Nestor, who in the poem hosts Telemachus on his own search for news of his father.

Bonus detour: The real island of Ithaki wasn't used for filming, but it's still reachable by ferry from Patras or Astakos with Levante Ferries. For Odyssey fans, sailing into the harbor Homer's hero spent ten years trying to reach is a fitting way to close the loop.
