Koh Phi Phi Travel Guide

Approaching the Phi Phi Islands by boat is unforgettable: dramatic limestone cliffs, crystal-clear turquoise water, and the feeling that you’re arriving somewhere truly special. This guide covers everything you need to know, including how to get to Koh Phi Phi by ferry, the best experiences like Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon, where to stay on Phi Phi Don, and essential travel tips.

Where is Koh Phi Phi?

Koh Phi Phi is located in Thailand’s Andaman Sea, between Phuket and Krabi. Despite being easy to reach by ferry, the islands feel far removed from busy mainland life.

The Phi Phi Islands are made up of several islands. Phi Phi Don is the main island and the only one with hotels, restaurants and ferry access. There are no cars, so getting around is done primarily on foot or scooter.

Phi Phi Leh is uninhabited and protected. This is where you’ll find famous attractions such as Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon, which are visited by boat from Phi Phi Don.

How to get to Koh Phi Phi

Ferries are by far the easiest way of reaching Koh Phi Phi. The most popular departure points are Phuket and Krabi, both of which have frequent daily sailings. Koh Phi Phi is also commonly visited as part of an island-hopping route from Koh Lanta.

Visit Maya Bay

Maya Bay is one of the most famous beaches in Thailand, located on Phi Phi Leh in the Andaman Sea. Known for its towering limestone cliffs and crystal-clear water, the bay rose to global fame after appearing in The Beach starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Today, Maya Bay is a protected area with controlled access to support environmental recovery. Visitors can walk onto the beach via a boardwalk, but swimming is not permitted. Most people visit Maya Bay as part of a Koh Phi Phi boat tour from Phi Phi Don.

Swim at Pileh Lagoon

Pileh Lagoon (also known as Pileh Bay) is a natural lagoon on Phi Phi Leh, surrounded by striking cliffs and emerald-green water. Unlike Maya Bay, swimming is allowed here, making it a highlight of many Phi Phi Islands tours. The calm, enclosed water is ideal for floating and photos, especially in the early morning. Pileh Lagoon is typically accessed by longtail boat or speedboat from Phi Phi Don.

Hike to the Koh Phi Phi Viewpoint

The Koh Phi Phi Viewpoint offers the most iconic panoramic view of Phi Phi Don, overlooking both Tonsai Bay and Loh Dalum Bay. The viewpoint can be reached via a short uphill walk that takes around 25 to 40 minutes, depending on fitness and weather. Visiting early in the morning or near sunset helps avoid the heat and crowds. It’s one of the best free things to do in Koh Phi Phi and a must for first-time visitors.

Monkey Beach

Monkey Beach is a small sandy cove on Phi Phi Don, made famous for its population of wild macaques. The beach is usually reached by kayak or longtail boat from Tonsai or Loh Dalum Beach. While the setting is beautiful, visitors should be cautious, as monkeys can be aggressive if fed or approached too closely. Monkey Beach is best visited briefly and with personal belongings securely stored.

Bamboo Island

Bamboo Island (Koh Pai) is a flat island located north of the main Phi Phi Islands and is a popular location for snorkeling and relaxed beach time. The island features white sand beaches and clear shallow water, making it suitable for swimming and beginner snorkelers. Bamboo Island is typically included in Phi Phi island-hopping tours and is a quieter alternative to the more crowded stops around Phi Phi Leh.
