Ohara Ferry Port

Found on the jungle island of Iriomote in the furthest reaches of southern Japan, the port of Ohara is the perfect departure point for those desperate to explore the remote isles of the Yaeyama archipelago. Despite being the largest of these Pacific Ocean islands, Iriomote is sparsely populated and almost entirely covered in leafy rainforest and dense mangrove swamps. Its untouched natural beauty is embodied by the Iriomote cat, an endangered species of Leopard that only exists on the isle.

Ohara port can be found on the south-western tip of the island alongside the banks of a narrow sea inlet. Although the port has plenty of parking for visitors and is serviced by a bus that takes passengers to and from town (as well as to the town of Funaura in the north,) the ferry terminal itself is limited in terms of facilities. The small building houses a café and a tourist information point from which visitors can learn more about the island’s unique Japanese wilderness.

Travelling to the port from anywhere on the isle is simple due to the 215 highway that snakes up and along the northern coast, cutting through every major town along the way. The south of the island however is uninhabited, and therefore cannot be reached using conventional transport methods.

Two routes currently leave from the port, both serviced by YKF ferries. One route takes ferry-goers the half hour journey to the nearby Kohama island, home of the active Mount Otake volcano, while a regular daily service sails slightly further east to Ishigaki.
